Comments from people who know Denver. Helpfull hints and tidbits about Denver and the surrounding area.

Steven B, Littleton, CO. -I think it takes about 45 minutes one way to get from DIA to downtown Denver. It might be worth it just to get on the bus, go to town and come back. Or go to town, walk an hour and come back. Not a whole lot to see, but it beats sitting around the airport. There also may be a bus to Boulder. Same deal. Depends on how adventurous you are. Mind the evening rush hour, or bad weather. It will take a lot longer to get back, and you risk an airport nightmare.

Bryan D, Denver, CO. -Their event listing is at www.denverpost.com/calendar and it has all sorts of stuff from arts to sport to who knows what. A trip downtown for part of a day could include the 16th Street Mall (a pedestrian mall with bars, restaurants and some good shopping as well as the usual touristy crap shops - free shuttle buses run up and down the road constantly and you can get on and off wherever you like), seeing the State Capitol building with its gold plated dome(definitely worth a look inside), the new Denver Art Museum building, and there are several other noteworthy places such as the Denver Mint, Denver History Museum, all in one small area. Up one end of 16th Street Mall is LoDo (lower downtown), which is where you can find the pubs and clubs if you're there into the evening. El Chapultepec is a famous and long-established jazz bar. If you have a car available, one of the cool places I always take weekend visitors is Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison, just west of the city in the foothills. This is a stretch of road where they found fossils while building the road, and built around them so you can walk along beside the highway and literally see these huge bones sticking right out of the hill. Drive up Lookout Mountain for a terrific view of the city, visit Buffalo Bill's Grave up there if you're into cheese and/or history, then stop in Golden on the way back and do the tour of the Coors brewery. They give you some free beer afterwards assuming you're over 21. If you have time, get up to Boulder, which is a stunningly beautiful town.

Margaret N, Estes Park, CO. -You can drive northwest to Estes Park from Denver, takes about 1 1/2 hours, it's a really pretty town, check out the Stanley Hotel (the Shining hotel). Just be careful and watch for wandering elk. They are about to go into rut up there, and they and the tourists taking pictures of them are everywhere. The leaves are changing up there, too, and it's really pretty, with just the right chill in the air. If there is no snow on the mountains yet, you can drive through Rocky Mtn National Park to get to Trail Ridge Road, which crosses the Continental Divide. At the top you can see about three states. Just watch out for the mountain goats and elk. There is a per car fee to get into the park, though, but it's not a lot.

Mary S, Denver, CO. - Mosly central to downtown/capitol hill/cherry creek neighborhoods Tattered cover bookstore - (one downtown on 16th street, as cherry creek is moving) - the new one at Colfax and Columbine is open! walk or bike around platte park area, at the way west end of 16th street mall. Rent bikes and do the Cherry Creek - pics Trail, platte river trail - better yet get a bike overnight and do an evening ride when cooler. Bike or walk or drive 7th avenue between Downing and east to Monaco, and up to 20th and back - awesome old mansions and houses - and some small neighborhood shops along the way. 16th Street Mall - of course - big pedestrian mall - movie theatre at Pavillions if really hot Do thrift and vintage stores on south broadway between 6th and I-25 - Cool retro shops and really cool used bookstores - and further south on broadway some great antique stores - and Mayan theatre has indy movies Mile Hi (huge) Flea Market on Saturday or Sunday, again may or may not be your thing but different. other cities: Golden and Boulder - Boulder's easy to get to via express bus from downtown Oh - Esquire theatre at 6th and Downing has midnight movies - like 80s flicks or old horror movies - it's ok to talk and have fun -like a big party. again that's MY interests - but they're all pretty genuine to Denver and the various neighborhoods, oh best idea - pick up a Westword (or westword.com) on Thursday's - list different events for the week have fun - enjoy the city. be sure to get outdoors from 6-9pm - not as hot and beautiful sunsets from the city.
